The ball is intercepted by a San Diego player near midcourt. He throws the ball immediately after intercepting it. Why?

He would have landed on the opposite side of the midcourt line - an over-and-back violation! It would have been Connecticut's ball at midcourt with a second remaining. However, he gets rid of the ball before landing. The play of the game - and you won't hear a single commentator say a word about it.
