I was talking with a gentleman at the car dealership this morning who was an engineer.
"Batteries", he said. "Do something on batteries". And so we shall. Give some thought to this:
When you charge your cell-phone, what happens?
We'll also look at a simple, but very cool design, anybody can do quickly in Excel.

Felix Baumgartner and the Speed of Sound He set the world record for skydiving an estimated 128,000 ft, reaching an estimated speed of 834 mph, or Mach 1.24. Mach 1.24? That means he went faster than the speed of sound. Did he? I say ----- I don't know. And that's what we're going to investigate in the spreadsheet! Can the issue really be explained by "Jiggling Atoms"? The goal: Create a quick spreadsheet that leads to one / two very cool discoveries. What they are? I have no idea!

APRIL 2012 MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
A CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT
=EQUALS= first met in October, 2010. The remarkable Benoit Mandelbrot was interested! "For years, I have been waiting for an initiative like yours." But he sadly passed away, days before our first meeting.
He included in an e-mail, just before he passed away, this note: "One question I want to ask you is whether you are going on with your program and wish you good luck."
The math in the Mandelbrot Set is accessible to students / teachers of all ages and abilities. EVERYBODY CAN DO THIS! Yes - in the spreadsheet!
As we head into the summer, I'd like to have this project on the table - with time to play around with it, create your own images, etc.
And meet again! A MANDELBROT CELEBRATION!
