=EQUALS= is a math, science, programming, and critical thinking club for Kansas City students and teachers. The club is open to persons of all ages.
There is no cost to attend meetings.
Being a math club might suggest this is for kids good at math. That's true - partially. Despite having my master's degree, I'm not that good at math. This club is for students of all abilities, and for those not-so-good at math, we will look at math from an entirely different perspective.
=====
BREAKING NEWS!
BENOIT MANDELBROT IS VERY INTERESTED IN THE PROJECT AND WILL MAKE AN APPEARANCE WHEN WE INVESTIGATE THE MANDELBROT SET!
Sad Follow-Up
It was with great sadness I learned of Mandelbrot's death this last Thursday. When we last communicated, he had mentioned his poor health, but added "Health Permitting" to his note. I had no idea he had pancreatic cancer. Rest in peace, and Well Done.

========================
The goal is to look at fractals, simulation, statistics, chaos and complexity, engineering, math, etc., from a new perspective – and actually do the work.
The club meets at the KU-Edwards Campus at 127th and Quivira in Overland Park, KS. The first meeting will be October 18th. The club meets from 7:00 – 8:00, though there will be a student exhibit from 6:30 – 7:00. We will meet in Room 163 on the Main Floor.
November and December dates are being confirmed now.
THE TENTATIVE LAYOUT
6:30 – 7:00: Students display their own works, answer questions, talk about processes, etc.
7:00 – 7:20: General Meeting / Main Presentation.
7:20 – 7:35: Short presentations from students.
7:35 – 7:45: Question and answer session on how to do certain things programming-wise.
7:45 – 7:50: Raffle for prizes.
7:50 – 7:55: Prior month’s Challenge-winner, and a brief explanation on methods.
7:55 – 8:00: Close with =EQUALS= “Challenge of the Month”.
The Main Presentation – and topic – will be available two weeks prior to the presentation for everyone to review, play around with, attempt to program it themselves, etc. This way, everyone will come to the meeting armed with a background of the topic, and questions at the ready!
DOWNLOADABLE BOOKS FOR
The goal of this club is to introduce students and teachers to different methods of actually doing the programming to analyze a subject, be it engineering, fractals, traffic patterns, probability, weather, etc. One typical barrier to doing the programming is the software used. How does one get it, how does one afford it, learning curves, etc., are all relevant issues. To overcome these, an application most people have on their computers - Microsoft Excel - is used. That's right - everything you see on this site has been done in Excel!
Additionally, I've written downloadable books to not only demonstrate how to do certain things in Excel, but additionally to provide articles on the material covered as well.
